This is a small group consisting of 2 genetic matches, but only one of them has shared the identities of their furthest known ancestors making it impossible to compare lineage data. The one lineage associated with the group at this time is Thomas Guthrie 1732 Orkney, SCT - 1797 Abbeville, SC & wife Jean Duncan. The most common surname matches with the group at this time are Green and Pagett.
Thomas Guthrie 1732 Orkney, SCT - 1797 Abbeville, SC (Jean Duncan)
Despite the Y-DNA Match between Participant 170986 and N71610, only one of the two men has shared a lineage with the project, that of furthest known ancestors Thomas Guthrie & Jean Duncan of Orkney, Scotland and Abbeville, South Carolina. We do have several Family Finder participants from that line.
Thomas Guthrie was born in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland. A marriage contract was signed in Botriphnie, Banffshire, Scotland on 27 Jul 1754 when he pledged to marry Jean Duncan. The marriage occurred on 6 August 1754 according to the Botriphnie Parish Records. The majority of their children were born before their immigration to Savannah, Chatham, Georgia in September of 1774 when they arrived on the ship ‘Marlborough’ as indentured servants to Thomas Brown in GA.
Children born in Georgia: Alinor.
By 1788, they were residing in the Camden District of South Carolina, and were enumerated in the 1790 census of Abbeville, South Carolina. The last will & testament of Thomas Guttrey was probated in Abbeville, SC.
All three of the Family Finder participants state they descend from Thomas & Jean (Duncan) Guthrie’s son John Guthrie and his wife Jean Norwood. One descends from their son John Lee Guthrie & Elizabeth Sweat, and two from their son Samuel Guthrie & Nancy_____.
Note that there is a Robert Guthrie who reportedly married a Martha Jane Norwood in Abbeville, who is linked to Guthrie Family Group 13. It is unknown if there is an error in the identification of the wife, or if these two Guthrie men from genetically different Abbeville families happened to marry two Norwood women.
Since we do not know the exact lineages of both of our Y-DNA Project Particiapants, it is impossible to glean any comparative data. Do they both descend from Thomas & Jean’s son John Guthrie, as do our Family Finder Participants? Or does their ancestral line come from one of the other sons? Or does participant N71610 claim a completely different Guthrie line as his own? Knowing these answers could help steer our quest.
