Samuel was born on 24 August 1815 in North Springfield, Erie, Pennsylvania to Mary Ann (Lybarger) & Samuel Guthrie. He was their eldest child.

1825: BIRTH of CATHARINE MINEAR

There are spelling variations for her given name: Katharine (marriage certificate), Catherine (census records), Katherine (LRG's book), and Catharine (tombstone). For now, we'll go with the latter since it is literally written in stone. She was born on 16 April 1825 in Randolph County, Virginia to Lidya (Holbert) & Manassah Minear.

1834: DEATH of FATHER, WILLIAM CAMPBELL GUTHRIE

Samuel's father, William Campbell Guthrie, died between 18 July and 10 August 1834 in North Springfield, Erie, Pennsylvania. Samuel helped his mother support their large family, remaining in Erie for another 4 years before heading west.

1840: RESIDENCE UNKNOWN

Possibly in Iowa by this time. 

1841: MARRIAGE of SAMUEL GUTHRIE & CATHARINE MINEAR

Samuel & Catharine (spelled Katharine in the record) were married on 2 September 1841 in Chequest, Van Buren, Iowa. They had 5 sons and 6 daughters. 

1842: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, MARY GUTHRIE

Mary Guthrie was born on 27 November 1842 in Davis County, Iowa, Samuel and Catharine's eldest child. She married Edward M Rullman (1851-1922) on 8 October 1873, when she was 30 years of age. Mary died on 5 August 1895 at 52Y 3M 8D of age in Eldon, Wapello, Iowa. She is buried in Troy Cemetery, Troy, Davis, Iowa.  

1844: BIRTH of SON, GEORGE WASHINGTON GUTHRIE

George was born on 16 Feb 1844 in Davis County, Iowa. He is the great-grandfather of DNA Project Participant #214109. George married Mary Alice Veatch in Schuyler, Missouri on 23 August 1877. They were the parents of 3 sons and 1 daughter, including American Guthrie and Allied Families author, Laurence R. Guthrie. The family moved from Missouri back to Iowa and later onto Comanche County Oklahoma. George died in Lawton, Comanche County, on 8 January 1924.

1845: BIRTH of SON, WILLIAM ROGER GUTHRIE

William was born on 27 October 1845 in Davis County, Iowa. He married Annie S Whitbeck. They had no children. William died on 16 April 1890 in Aquetuck, Albany, New York. He is buried at Grove Cemetery, Coeymans, Albany, New York.

1848: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, SARAH GUTHRIE

Sarah was born on 18 December 1848. She worked as a public school teacher. She married widower John R Frogge, a native of Tennessee, but living in Jasper, MO at the time of their marriage. They moved to Montana and later Oregon. She died on 16 September 1917 and is buried in Troy Cemetery, Davis County, Iowa. They had no children.

1850: BIRTH of SON, ALFRED ATHELSTANE GUTHRIE

Alfred was born on 20 September 1850 in Davis County, Iowa. Determined to gain a quality education, he alternatively attended and taught school, first at the Troy Academy, and then Iowa State University. He married Ella M Osmond on 25 December 1877. They had 1 son, Keith Osmond Guthrie. Ella died in 1879. Alfred became a Superintendent of Iowa City Public Schools for several years. Then, in 1884, he entered Albany Law School, was admitted to the bar after graduation, and formed a law partnership with Andrew J Colvin and his brother William R Guthrie, taking the name Colvin, Guthrie & Guthrie. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he married on 26 April 1898 to Margaret Harland Sargent. They had 1 daughter, Margaret Sargent Guthrie. Alfred died on 27 March 1922 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. There are no DNA Project Participants from Alfred's line at this time.

1852: BIRTH of SON, FRANCIS M GUTHRIE

Francis was born on 20 September 1852, a date calculated from the information on his tombstone. He died on 3 August 1858 at the age of 5Y 10M 14D of "brain fever", a condition caused by becoming overheated while helping his older brothers in the hay-mow. He is buried in Troy Cemetery, Troy, Davis, Iowa. 

1854: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, LYDIA A GUTHRIE

Lydia was born on 9 July 1854 in Davis, Iowa. She was an avid reader and began teaching when quite young. She taught in the Eagley School House, staying in the home of her uncle, Daniel Eagley, in Pennsylvania. She met her future husband at a Teachers Institute in Bloomfield, Iowa. Charles R Van Duyn & Lydia Guthrie married and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska where their 3 children were born. Lydia died 30 January 1933 in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon. She is buried at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

1856: BIRTH of SON, JOHN WESLEY GUTHRIE

John was born on 4 April 1856 in Davis, Iowa. He married Zeruah Louisa Rullman. They were parents to 2 sons: Wayne Elliott and Walter Bernard, and 1 daughter: Ruth Winfred. John died on 22 September 1945 and his wife 4 years later. They share a headstone in Troy Cemetery. There are no DNA Project Participants from John's line at this time.

1859: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, HANNAH ELIZABETH GUTHRIE

Hannah was born on 23 August 1859 in Davis, Iowa. She never married, and lived with her sister Laura Guthrie in Eldon, later Bloomfield, Iowa. She died there on 6 March 1923 and is buried in Troy Cemetery.

1860: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, RHODA MAY GUTHRIE

Rhoda was born on 14 August 1860. In a double wedding with her sister Sarah, on 18 March 1889, she married widower Millard Cox. They lived on the Guthrie homestead until her father's death after which they moved to Pulaski, Iowa where her husband engaged in the hardware and notion business. They later moved to Des Moines. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Rhoda died on 12 Dec 1917 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa. Her obituary can be read at her Find-a-Grave Memorial. She is buried in Glendale Cemetery.

1862: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, LAURA BELLE GUTHRIE

Laura was born on 20 June 1862 in Davis, Iowa. She never married, and lived with her sister Hannah Guthrie in Eldon, later Bloomfield, Iowa. She died there on 9 May 1934. She shares a headstone with her sister in Troy Cemetery. 

1863: DEATH of WIFE, CATHARINE MINEAR GUTHRIE

Catharine died on 1 Jan 1863 in Davis County, Iowa. She is buried at Troy Cemetery. 

1870: CENSUS of UNION, DAVIS, IOWA

Samuel died in Davis County, Iowa on 16 March 1891. He is buried in Troy Cemetery.
