THE HIGHLIGHTS:

1837: BIRTH of HANNAH BRADFORD

The 1900 census lists Hannah Bradford's DOB as March 1837. Online trees list it as 16 March 1837. The identity of her parents is unconfirmed and appears to be a matter of some controversy. Online trees list Jacob & Charlotte (Lemley) Bradford, Robert & Nancy (Wells) Bradford or no parents at all.

Did Solomon Guthrie marry a girl from Greene County, Pennsylvania, or did the marriage occur just after the family arrived in Mercer County, Illinois? The Illinois Death Records on Family Search list the birthplace of several of Solomon & Hannah's children as being in Greene County, Pennsylvania, so that answers our question. Their marriage probably took place in Greene County, PA.

Let's check some census records for Greene, PA. There are only 2 Hannah Bradfords +/- 10 years of Hannah's age living in Greene, Pennsylvania in 1850 & 1860.

Hannah #1: Daughter of Jacob & Charlotte (Lemley) Bradford, living in Wayne Township. This couple seems like a good match for several reasons: 1) Prior to their move to Wayne Township, Jacob lived in Whiteley Township, 2) Their Hannah is listed with the same birth year this one, and 3) The Lemley family is known to have intermarried with this Guthrie line. However, Doddridge County VA/WV marriage records prove that their daughter Hannah married Adam J. Ash of that county by including the names of the bride's parents: Jacob & Charlotte Bradford.

Hannah #2: Daughter of Robert & Nancy (Wells) Bradford, living in Wayne. Both parents died in 1857 & 1856 respectively, and so in 1860, Hannah Bradford is found living with some of her siblings in Franklin Township. The Bradford Family's pioneer origins are discussed in The Tenmile Country and its Pioneer Families, by Howard L Leckey. Jacob Bradford, above, is related to this Bradford line, too.

Is there any proof that Robert & Nancy (Wells) Bradford are the parents of the Hannah Bradford who married Solomon Guthrie? Not that I have found, but the census records support that Hannah #2 is the likely candidate.

1840: BIRTH of SOLOMON GUTHRIE

Solomon Guthrie was born on 26 March 1840 in Whiteley Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania to Jacob & Lucinda (Hobbs) Guthrie. He was the eldest surviving son.

1840: CENSUS of GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

The JACOB GUTHRIE Household (WHITELEY TOWNSHIP): 1M & 1F 20-29, 1M 5-9, 1M & 1F <5.

This census may or may not have included Solomon. First born, Archibald, was still living in 1840. He is the male of 5-9 years. Vilanda was next, born in 1835, making her the female <5 years. If Lorenzo, born about 1838, was still living in 1840, he would be the male <5. If Lorenzo had already died, the youngest male would be infant Solomon.

The ROBERT BRADFORD Household (FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP): 1M & 1F 40-49, 1M & 1F 20-29, 2M 15-19, 1M & 2F 10-14, 2M & 1F 5-9, 1F<5.

Hannah was the youngest of the Bradford children, born about 1837, so she is the female <5.

1850: CENSUS of GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

The GUTHRIE Household (WHITELEY TOWNSHIP): Jacob 37 farmer 1500 PA; Lucinda 36; Archibald 16; Belinda 14; Lorenzo D 13; Solomon 11; Noah 9; Elizabeth 6; J.P. 3 (male); Jasper 1. Next door to household of Joseph & Sarah Guthrie. Note: Surname is spelled as Gutheren.

The BRADFORD Household (FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP): Robert 59 farmer 2000 PA, Nancy 57, Rebecca 32, Wm 21, Jane 19, Nancy 17, Robert 16, Barbary 14, Jacob 13, Sidney 12, Hannah 10. Note: Hannah's age makes her estimated DOB as 1840. Sidney's is 1838.

1860: CENSUS of GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

The GUTHRIE Household (WHITELEY TOWNSHIP): Jacob 50 farmer 2000 800 PA; Lucinda 48 housekeeping; Solomon 20 farmer; Noah 18 farmer; Cephus 11; Nancy E 9; Sarah J 4. Next door to household of Solomon Guthry (45) & family. Note: Surname is spelled as Guthrey.

The BRADFORD HOUSEHOLD (FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP): Henry 34 Farmer 4000 1500 PA, Jacob 24 Farmer PA, Cidda 19 housekeeper PA, Hannah 17 Housekeeper PA. Notes: Cidda is Sydney whose estimated DOB is 18, born about 1841. Hannah's age is listed here as 17, making her est. DOB as 1843. It seems like the girls are getting younger.

1862: MARRIAGE of SOLOMON GUTHRIE & HANNAH BRADFORD

I have not found a marriage record for Solomon & Hannah. The 1900 census lists them as being married 38 years, estimating their marriage occurring in 1862.

1863: BIRTH of SON, NOAH E GUTHRIE

The eldest of Solomon & Hannah's children, Noah was born on 2 December 1863 in Whiteley Township, Greene, Pennsylvania. Before 1870 his family moved to Ohio Grove, Mercer County, Illinois where he was listed in his parents' household at age 6 in 1870 and age 16 in 1880.

He married Mary Thompson on 23 December 1886 in Mercer County, Illinois. They were the parents of two sons: Archie Fiske Guthrie and Clarence Clifton Guthrie, and one other child of unknown gender who probably died in infancy before 1900.

Mary, who was older than her husband, died between 1920-1930. Noah is listed as a widower in the 1930 census when he is living with his son Clarence in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois. Noah died on 25 April 1938. He is buried in the McClure Cemetery in Seaton, Mercer, Illinois where at least 3 of his siblings (George, John & Solomon) are buried.

1863-1864: EMIGRATION to ILLINOIS

Sometime between Noah's birth and Grant's birth, the family moved to Illinois.

1865: BIRTH of SON, WILLIAM GRANT GUTHRIE

Grant was born on 26 January 1865 in Mercer County, Illinois. He married Mary Catherine 'Minnie' Hamilton (1862-1934) on 9 Jan 1889. They were parents to 2 sons and 2 daughters: Raymond Lee Guthrie, Paul Vern Guthrie, Bertha M Guthrie, and Clara Bell Guthrie, plus 1 child of unknown gender born & died between 1900-1910.

Grant's death certificate data is recorded at Family Search. {Film 1851452} He died at the age of 77 on 26 April 1942 in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois. He was buried on the 28th in Oak Grove.

Nellie died in East Moline, Rock Island, Illinois on 23 January 1947. She was also buried in Oquawka Cemetery.

1870: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, DELLA VALINDA GUTHRIE

Della was born on 13 April 1870. According to her Death Records her birthplace was Troy Grove, LaSalle, Illinois, but that was her residence with her husband. Since her parents were living in Ohio Grove, Mercer County, Illinois at the time of her birth, that is her likely birthplace. She married William Marks about 1892 and they had several children. She died on 16 Feb 1938 in Medota, LaSalle, Illinois, and was buried on the 19th in Troy Grove Cemetery.

1870: CENSUS of OHIO GROVE, MERCER, ILLINOIS, USA

They are both buried at McClure Cemetery in Seaton, Mercer, Illinois.

1877: BIRTH of SON, JACOB GUTHRIE

Jake was born on 15 November 1877 in Ohio Grove, Mercer, Illinois. He was enumerated in the 1880 census with his parents.
