THE HIGHLIGHTS:

1810: BIRTH of JACOB GUTHRIE

The name Jacob comes from the Lemley family line. He was born on 5 September 1810 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania.

1812: BIRTH of LUCINDA HOBBS

The dates of Lucinda's birth and death seem to be a bit speculative. It is listed as either 1812 or 1813, and in one online tree as 10 January 1812. Most sources list the same DOD as her husband Jacob. The biography of her son, Noah Guthrie, states that Lucinda was born in Green County, Pennsylvania.

1820: CENSUS of WHITELEY, GREENE, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

ARCHIBALD GUTHERY HOUSEHOLD: 2M&1F 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1M 10-15, 2M&2F <10, 2 in agriculture.

Those listed likely include: Archibald Guthrie (41), Elizabeth (29), Jacob (10), Sarah (7), Solomon (4), Cephas (2)

That leaves the following unidentified: 1M 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1F <10

1829: DEATH of MOTHER, ELIZABETH LEMLEY GUTHRIE

Elizabeth died on 5 March 1829 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania, USA. She is buried at the Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene, Pennsylvania.

1830: CENSUS of WHITELEY, GREENE, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

ARCHIBALD GUTHERY HOUSEHOLD: 1M 50-59, 1M 20-29, 1F 15-19, 2M 10-14, 2M & 1F 5-9, 1M&1F <5.

Those listed include: Archibald Guthrie (51), Jacob (20), Sarah (17), Solomon (14), Cephas (12), Samuel (9), Ezekiel (7), Charlotte (5), Archibald (3), Elizabeth (1).

1833: MARRIAGE of JACOB GUTHRIE and LUCINDA HOBBS

Jacob and Lucinda married on 3 March 1833 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania, USA {No Source Data}

The biography of their son, Noah H Guthrie, a Illinois State Representative, and two-time sheriff of Mercer County, Illinois, indicated that Jacob & Lucinda were parents to 11 children only 2 of which were living at the time of publication in 1897. It appears that most of their children died fairly young.

1834: BIRTH of SON, ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE

Archibald Guthrie was named after his paternal grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born on 8 May 1834 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. He was listed as a 16-year-old in his parents' household in the 1850 census. He is not listed in the 1860 census with the family, nor anywhere in Pennsylvania as far as I can tell. The DOD listed for him in online trees is 16 Oct 1854, however, comparing this date to the Guthrie Cemetery listings suggests it belongs to another family member. Need to get a look at a photo of this tombstone to verify the DOB/DOD.

1834-5: REMARRIAGE of FATHER, ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE to MARY PHEBE ROSEBERRY SCOTT

Archibald remarried 5-6 years after Elizabeth's death. His new wife was the widow of Robert S Scott. Mary Phebe Roseberry Scott married Archibald Guthrie about 1834-1835. Her first husband died in 1833 and her first child with Archibald was born in 1836, so the estimated marriage date is somewhere in between. Mary & Robert Scott were the parents of 3 sons and 2 daughters: John Roseberry Scott, Mathias Scott, Sarah Scott, Catherine Scott, and Thomas Hughes Scott. Archibald & Mary had 2 daughters of their own: Mary Jane Guthrie and Martha Guthrie.

1835: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, VILANDA GUTHRIE

Vilanda Guthrie was born about 1836 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. She was listed in the 1850 census at age 14 with the rest of her family. She married Inghram A Shriver sometime before the 1860 census, probably around 1855.

1860 - SHRIVER HOUSEHOLD in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania: Ingram Shriver 27 farmer 9000 1600 Penna; Vilinda Shriver 25 house keeper Penna; Lucinda Shriver 4 Penna; Jacob L Shriver 2 Penna.

1880 - SHRIVER HOUSEHOLD in Clifford, Butler, Kansas: Ingrahan Shriver 46 PA; Vilinda Shriver 44 wife housekeeper PA; Lucinda Shriver 22 daughter teaching PA; Vina Rees 16 servant IL; Quin T Berry 23 servant KY; William Johnson 38 servant VA

Vilanda Guthrie Shriver died in 1886. She is buried at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, Marion, Kansas, Section A. Ingram remarried after Vilinda's death to Virginia A. ____. Vilinda, Ingram and Virginia share a memorial stone. They are buried next to Vilanda & Inghram's son Jacob Leasure Shriver and his wife Hannah.

1838: BIRTH of SON, LORENZO D GUTHRIE

Lorenzo Guthrie was born 30 January 1838 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. Online trees list his DOD as 30 April 1846, but he is clearly enumerated in the 1850 census with the rest of the family at 13 years of age. No sign of Lorenzo in future census records. Presumed dead after 1850.

1840: CENSUS of GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

JACOB GUTHRIE HOUSEHOLD: 1M & 1F 20-29, 1M 5-9, 1M & 1F <5.

This enumeration likely includes: Jacob (29), Lucinda (28), Archibald (6), Vilanda (5), Lorenzo (2).

1840: BIRTH of SON, SOLOMON GUTHRIE

Solomon Guthrie was born on 26 March 1840 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. He is the direct ancestor of DNA Project Participant BHG. Solomon was enumerated with his parents in 1850 and 1860 in Whiteley. He married Hannah Bradford about 1862. They were parents to 6 sons and 2 daughters: Noah E, William Grant, Solomon Bealer, Della Valinda, John Wesley, George W, Jacob, and Hannah Zella. The family moved to Ohio Grove, Mercer, Illinois by 1870 where they remained through the 1880 census. They were living in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois by 1900 where Solomon worked as a mail carrier. Hannah died in 1903 and Solomon boarded with the Cowan family until his death on 13 April 1913.

1842: BIRTH of SON, NOAH HOBBS GUTHRIE

Noah was born on either the 3rd or the 6th of March in 1842 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. (Death Certificate lists 3rd, Biography lists 6th). He was listed with his parents and siblings in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. On 17 September 1861 he 'answered the summons to arms' by enlisting in Company A, 7th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac. He fought in all the major battles (Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House). During the last battle he received a severe gunshot wound in the leg requiring the removal of 8-inches of his tibia. "This section of bone is now preserved in the Army Medical Museum. It was remarkable that the wound did not result in the entire loss of the use of the limb." {Source: Compendium of Freemasonry in Illinois, Chicago, 1897.}

Noah's Civil War Records can be found at Fold3.

A typical set of Civil War Era surgical instruments:

After the war, Noah attended the Illinois Soldier's College. He was an official Census Taker in the 1870 & 1880 U.S. Federal Censuses and was elected Sheriff of Mercer County, Illinois for two consecutive terms. Noah joined the Masons in 1873 and attained the degree of Royal Arch Mason in 1897. In 1892 Noah was nominated and elected as a member of the Illinois state general assembly, and reelected to that position in 1894. He was a Republican who cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln.

Noah H Guthrie married Delilah Hardy in 1870. They had four children: Fred Ashford Guthrie, Edmund N Guthrie, Lottie Grace Guthrie, and Jacob Ray Guthrie.

Could Noah's middle name be Hobbs? [Note: BHG's sister Michelle Guthrie London states that it was indeed Hobbs.]

Noah's biography in the Compendium of Freemasonry in Illinois gives the following info about the Guthrie family roots in America:

"... of Scotch-Irish ancestry, who were early settlers of New England and had to fight the Indians in many an encounter. His great-grandfather Guthrie was killed by the red savages, and several members of his family were taken captive by them."

Archibald (Great-Great Grandfather)

Delilah Hardy Guthrie passed away in 1921. Noah lived until 25 July 1922. Both died in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois.

1844: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, ELIZABETH GUTHRIE

Elizabeth was born 27 October 1844 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. She was enumerated in the 1850 census with the family, then 6 years of age. She died on 22 September 1854.

1845: DEATH of FATHER, ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE

Jacob's father, Archibald Guthrie, died on 23 August 1845. He is buried in Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene, Pennsylvania.

1847: BIRTH of SON, JOSEPHUS P GUTHRIE

Josephus P Guthrie was probably named for his Uncle Cephas. He was born in 1847 and was listed with the family in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses. The first two were in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania where he was born. The family emigrated to Mercer County Illinois during the 1860s and lived in or near Oak Grove. I do not find Josephus listed in the 1880 census.

1849: BIRTH of SON, JASPER GUTHRIE

Jasper must have died young. The only census record naming him with the family is found in 1850 when he is only 1 year of age.

1850: CENSUS of WHITELEY, GREENE, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

GUTHEREN HOUSEHOLD: Jacob 37 farmer 1500 PA; Lucinda 36; Archibald 16; Belinda 14; Lorenzo D 13; Solomon 11; Noah 9; Elizabeth 6; J.P. 3 (male); Jasper 1.

Next door to household of Joseph & Sarah Guthrie.

1851: BIRTH of SON, JAMES GUTHRIE

James Guthrie was born about 1850-1850. Sometime after the 1850 census, but before Nancy's birth in 1851-1852. Like several of his siblings James died in 1854 during the same 3-week time period as his brother Archibald, Lorenzo, and Franklin and his sister Elizabeth. [Source: Michelle Guthrie London]

1852: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, NANCY E GUTHRIE

Nancy was born between 1851-1852 in Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. She was listed with the family there in the 1860 census and in Mercer County, IL in the 1870 census. In 1870, Nancy was 18 and of marriageable age. However, I do not find a Nancy of a similar age, born in PA, in the 1880 census for Mercer County. There are a couple of 'Nancy' women of an approximate age in the IL census, but none with an obvious connection to this Guthrie family.

1853: BIRTH of SON, FRANKLIN P GUTHRIE

Franklin was born on 7 Jan 1853 and died 15 Sep 1854. He is buried at Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene, Pennsylvania.

According to Find-a-Grave, this headstone identifies him as the son of Jacob & Lucinda, but due to the shadows on the photo I can't tell what it says other than Franklin's name. Does anyone have a better photo?

1856: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, SARAH J GUTHRIE

Sarah was estimated to be born in 1856. She was listed with the family in the 1860 census of her birthplace of Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania, and in 1870 in Ohio Grove, Mercer, Illinois, USA. Both of her parents died in the early 1870s while she would have been a teenager. If she was still living in 1800, Sarah was probably married. I find only one census entry for a Sarah Guthrie born in Pennsylvania and living in Illinois and that person is the daughter of a different Guthrie family.

Lucinda's DOD is often listed the same as her husband Jacob. It has also been listed as 17 April 1873. Burial location unknown, but likely to be in Mercer County, Illinois.
