ABOUT 1825: BIRTH of ALFRED C. GUTHERY
Alfred Guthery was born a few months before his father's death on 4 May 1825 in Pike County, Ohio, USA. His father's obituary indicates there were 3 orphaned children and Alfred was the youngest of 3. Source of the middle initial 'C' is his daughter Elizabeth's 1923 death record.
1827: BIRTH of JULIA ANN HOUCHINS
Julia Ann Houchins was born to Walter H & Elizabeth S (Kenney) Houchins in Louisa County, Virginia, USA on 2 Sep 1827. She was the eldest of six children.
1830: GUTHRIE RESIDENCE UNKNOWN
Alfred's mother Nancy was a widow in 1830 and probably still living in Pike County, Ohio. She is not listed as a Head of Household, so it appears the family were likely living with relatives.
1840: GUTHRIE RESIDENCE UNKNOWN
Again, the Guthrie family is nowhere to be found., but again it is likely that they were still in Pike County, or at least in Ohio.

1849: BIRTH of SON, WILLIAM FRANKLIN GUTHRIE
Franklin Guthrie was born in 1849 (exact DOB unknown) in Scioto County, Ohio, USA. His parents had married in that county the year before and were still living there in 1850. In 1860 he was enumerated in his mother's household being only 11 years old at the time, but by 1870 he had already married and set up a household of his own. Sometime about 1857-1859, he married Sarah Elizabeth Willis, daughter of William & Mary Willis. They had two children, Charles Albert Guthrie and James Guthrie. Their marriage may have gone through some turbulent times. In 1870, Sarah listed herself as a widow and was living with the boys in Kansas. Franklin, 30, was very much alive and living with his mother in Prairie Creek, Logan, Illinois. In January of 1881 his brother-in-law, John H Smalley, petitioned the court to have him declared insane only to rescind his case before it could go to the judge. I cannot locate Franklin in the census records after 1880. The 1900 census for his mother Julia indicates that 1 of her 4 children was deceased by 1900. By process of elimination based on the others' known DOD, Franklin is the child dead prior to 1900. Franklin's wife Sarah died on 4 July 1940 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas.

1850: BIRTH of SON, AARON WALTER GUTHRIE
Aaron Walter Guthrie was apparently named after both his paternal and maternal grandfathers. He was born on 9 November 1850 in Scioto County, Ohio. He moved to Jackson, Sumner, Kansas by 1880 where he worked on the John M. Bennet farm, but no later than 2 years later he had relocated to Logan County, Illinois. Like his father before him, Aaron also married a "Julia A." In this case, Julia Azelious Irwin on 3 August 1882 in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. They were parents to two children: Gracie Gertrude Guthrie and Lawrence Daily Guthrie. Aaron died on 14 Sep 1944 in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, and his widow Julia in Washington, Tazwell, Illinois on 30 November 1962 at the ripe old age of 101. There is currently no representative from Aaron's line in the DNA Project.
1852: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, LOUISA ELLA GUTHRIE
Louisa Ella Guthrie was born in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio on 7 November 1852. She married John Henry Smalley in 1873 when she was 21 years old. They had only 1 child, a boy named James Alfred Smalley. It was Louisa's husband John Smalley who planned to have Louisa's brother William Franklin Guthrie (above) declared insane. There was no indication in the court papers about Smalley's reasons, only that he quickly rescinded his petition and was required to pay court costs. John Smalley died in 1920. Louisa died in Pekin, Tazewell, Illinois on 28 July 1933 and was buried on the 30th. Both are buried at Bethel Cemetery.
1854: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, ELIZABETH L GUTHRIE
Elizabeth L Guthrie was born on 8 December 1854 in Plymouth, Ashtabula, Ohio, the youngest child of Alfred & Julia. Her father died within a few months to years of her birth. They moved to Orvil, Logan, Illinois by the time she was 16. In 1870, still in Orvil, she was working as a servant in Mary Snider's hotel. Her future husband, Barton Manuel, was also living at the hotel. He was a teacher who had come to Logan County, Illinois from Pennsylvania. They were married on 18 September 1881 in Logan County. [Illinois State Marriage Index: Volume 001 Page 0127 Logan]. Barton and Elizabeth had 1 child, a son named Charles. In 1900, Barton, Elizabeth, Charles, and a boarder, Simeon Tyler, are living in Allen Grove, Mason, Illinois. In 1910, Elizabeth, listed as a widow, is living with her widowed mother Julia A Guthrie, and in 1920 the widowed Elizabeth is the Head of a Household that includes 4 boarders. The only Illinois Death Records found for a Barton Manuel indicate his death was 8 Jul 1926, 3 years after Elizabeth's death, in Jacksonville, Morgan, IL. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery, San Jose, Logan County, IL. If this is the correct Barton Manuel it is possible that Barton and Elizabeth were either separated or divorced and she elected to go with the status of widow.

1910-1920: DEATH of JULIA ANN (HOUCHINS) GUTHERY
Exact year unknown. I cannot locate Julia in the 1920 census during which time she would have been 92, so it is likely that she died during the years in between. Her widowed daughter Elizabeth Guthery Manuel is not living with her in 1920. Burial location unknown. No probate records found in Logan County.
