THE HIGHLIGHTS:

1862: BIRTH of JOHN NEWTON GUTHRIE
John was born on 22 August 1862. He was Lewis & Lucy's first child, and the only one born in the old state of Virginia. The next year statehood was granted to West Virginia and Wetzel County was part of the 50-county group that became West Virginia. 

1867: BIRTH of MARIETTA DERIFIELD
The Derifield family lived in Lawrency County, Kentucky. Marietta's father was in the 14th KY Infantry during the Civil War. She was born 3 April 1867 at Blaine's Ferry. 

Sitting left front is Sylvester Derifield; Sitting right front is Derascus Holbrook Derifield Standing behind is Isaac Monterville Derifield. These men are the sons of Thomas Derifield and his wife Mary A. (Holbrook) Derifield. Derascus served in the 14th Kentucky Infantry (Union Army) in the Civil War. Family story has Sylvester serving on the Confederate side. Isaac was too young to serve. Thomas and Mary also had 5 daughters. Derascus and family (with his parents and 1 sister) moved to Minnesota.  Isaac and family moved to Washington State. Sylvester stayed in Lawrence Co., KY.

1881-1886: GUTHRIE FAMILY MOVES TO MINNESOTA
Sometime after the 1880 census, the Guthries moved north. They were there by 1887 when John married Marietta Derifield.

John & Marietta married on 18 Sep 1887 in North Howard Lake, Wright, Minnesota 

1888: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, LINNIE E. GUTHRIE
Linnie was born in Minnesota on 20 November 1888. The 1900 census lists her as Lucia. She became a Public School Teacher. She died 3 May 1975 in New Hope, Hennepin, Minnesota. Nothing further known. 

1890: BIRTH of SON, ERNEST EDWARD GUTHRIE
Ernest was born on 25 Oct 1890 in Hancock, Minnesota. While living in Chelan, Washington, he completed a 1917/18 WWI Registration Draft Card that includes his full name, age: 26, date & place of birth, employer & occupation: farm hand, marital status: single, description: Medium Height & Build, Blue Eyes, Brown Hair; Claims 1 lame leg. He died on 5 Oct 1960 in Seattle, King, Washington. Nothing further is known.

1893: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, ALICE E. GUTHRIE
Alice was born in Minnesota in May 1893. She died 29 May 1993 at 100 years of age. No further details.

1894: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, RUTH R. GUTHRIE
Ruth was born in Minnesota in July 1894. She was enumerated with the family in 1900 & 1910. No further details.

1897: BIRTH of SON, EVERETT GUTHRIE
Everett was born in May 1897 in Minnesota. He married Bertha Powell in June 1923. They had 1 daughter. He died on 24 March 1993 in Klamath Falls, Klamath, Oregon. No further details.

1899: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, ETHEL P. GUTHRIE
Ethel was born in Minnesota in July 1899. She died 20 July 1957. No further details.

1902: BIRTH of SON, CLARENCE LESTER GUTHRIE
Clarence was born on 8 March 1902 in Beltrami County, Minnesota. He married Lucille Marie Rush on 14 January 1928 in Jenkins, Crow Wing, Minnesota. He was living in Wenatchee, Chelan, Washington in 1930. In 1993, the Seattle Times published an interview with Clarence about his 50-year streak of Sunday School attendance. He died on 7 Sep 1996 in East Wenatchee, Washington. Clarence's line is represented in the DNA Project by Clarence R. Guthrie.

1904: BIRTH of SON, RALPH M. GUTHRIE
Ralph was born about 1904 in Beltrami County, Minnesota. He married Elise Eshen on 29 Dec 1930. He died on 29 Aug 1980 in Klamath Falls, Klamath, Oregon. No further details known. 

1906: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, BERNICE L. GUTHRIE
Bernice was born in 1906 in Beltrami County, MINNESOTA. In 1930, she was working in the household of E.A. Lodahl in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. She died on 14 July 1971. Bernice's son, Robert J. Roppe aka Bob, is one of the Branch C DNA Project contacts.

Vivian was born about 1912. She is listed in the 1920 census with her mother, sisters Ethel & Bernice, and stepfather, Noah Ritchie. No further details known. 

1914: DEATH of JOHN NEWTON GUTHRIE
John died on 16 July 1914 in Turtle River, Beltrami, Minnesota. Burial location unknown.

1915-1919: MARRIAGE of MARIETTA DERIFIELD GUTHRIE & NOAH RITCHIE
Marietta remarried to Noah Ritchie who had come to Minnesota from North Carolina.

This census shows that Noah, like Marietta, had been previously married. 

1938: DEATH of MARIETTA DERIFIELD GUTHRIE RITCHIE
Marietta died in Jenkins on 23 August 1938. Burial location unknown.
