1790-1800: BIRTH of EDMUND GUTHRIE
Edmund is a presumed son of James Guthrie & Elizabeth Eilor. The paper trail on this one is rather thin, but it ties Edmund fraternially to brothers James & Robert and to sister Sarah. The latter would also marry into the Sapp family, and Robert has several court records mentioning the Sapps. Their presumed brother James is the one with the true documentation linking him to parents James & Elizabeth (Eilor) Guthrie.
Edmund's name could potentially be Edward rather than Edmund. It is difficult to tell the difference in early records and there are so few involving him as it is. However, the fact that he has a son named Edmund strengthens that position.
The only record we currently have suggesting a DOB is the 1830 census, which provides a 10-year span of 1790-1800. This would fit the right timeframe to be a son of James & Elizabeth.
Birth location is another tricky subject. His parents were living either in Pennsylvania or Virginia at the time. His early years were most likely spent in the Monongalia region.
LRG writes: "EDMUND and ROBERT GUTHRIE apparently belonged to this line of Guthries although descendants state that they are of Scotch Irish ancestry, which would not be the case if indeed they be descended from the ancient family of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. David, Edmund, John, Joseph, James and Robert Guthrie are said to have been reared in a Dunkard settlement in Western Virginia, this was probably in Augusta or Rockingham County. They were related to people coming from Culpepper County and some of them at least may have been born in that County."
1800: RESIDENCE in VIRGINIA
Based upon what we think we know (see LRG above) Edmund was reared in Virginia.
1806: BIRTH of ELIZABETH SAPP
Reportedly in Harrison, Charles, Virginia, but I have found no supporting documentation so far. Census records do indicate that she was born in the state of Virginia.

The Household of Jas Guthrie: 1M&1F 45+ 1M 16-25, 3M & 1F 10-15 , 3M & 2F <10 (12 Total)
Edmund would most likely be one of the 3M in the 10-15 age category.
The Household of Jos Sapp: 1M 45+, 1F 26-44, 2M & 1F 10-15, 2M & 2F <10
Elizabeth was one of the 2F <10.
1814: WAR of 1812
ROBERT & EDMUND GUTHRIE served in Capt. Samuel Kennedy's Co VA Militia (Monongalia Capt. Samuel Kennedy Artillery Norfolk May 2 - Aug 30 1814)
1814: COURT RECORDS of MONONGALIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA
In June of 1814, ROBERT & EDWARD GUTHRIE are among signers of a petition to have a road surveyor appointed. Note that Edward might be Edmund. Despite being
busy with the militia, these two somehow had the time to sign a petition about a road.
1815: DEATH of FATHER, JAMES GUTHRIE
Sometime during the War of 1812, or at least before 1815, Edmund's (presumed) father, James Guthrie, died.
1820: RESIDENCE in VIRGINIA
It is presumed that Edmund Guthrie was living in Virginia in 1820, possibly with his mother. We don't have the exact marriage date for Edmund and Elizabeth, but based on their first child's DOB it was probably around 1820-1822. Elizabeth would only be 14 in 1820, so the marriage might have been closer to 1822, but that would still make her a young bride.
Edmund is not found as a Head of Household in the 1820 census. In fact, the entire 'G' section is missing from the alphabetical listing in the original scan of the 1820 Monongalia Census.
ABT. 1822: MARRIAGE to ELIZABETH SAPP
An estimate. There is no date provided in the Guthrie-Sapp source matierial.
1823: BIRTH of SONS, JOSEPH GUTHRIE & JAMES GUTHRIE
Presumably named for his maternal grandfather, Joseph Sapp, this son was born about 1823. It's a census-based estimate. He married Clemensey Dusenberry (Possibly aka Clarinda). 3 daughters. When his wife died 18 March 1889, the death record was completed with the name 'Clarinda'. Joseph died in 1893 in Monongalia County, West Virginia leaving a will dated 10 Feb 1893. There is currently no representative in the DNA project for Joseph's line.
James Guthrie was also born about 1823. This is also a census-based estimate, so it is unknown if they were actually twins, born in the same year, or not. He married Elizabeth Walls in Monongalia, Virginia on 16 August 1845. They lived in Grant, Monongalia, VA/WV. James & Elizabeth had 4 sons and 7 daughters.
Benjamin was born in Monongalia County, Virginia. He married Katherine Saphira Walls
on 25 Nov 1849. They had 7 sons and 5 daughters. The family was enumerated in the 1870 census of Winfield, Marion, West Virginia. Katherine died 2 years later and by the 1880 census the youngest children seemed to be living with relatives. I can't locate Benjamin on the 1880 census. He died in 1907 in West Virginia and is buried in Prickett Fort Cemetery, Fairmont, Marion County. Benjamin's descendants are represented by DNA Project participant Daryl W Guthrie
1827: BIRTH of DAUGHTER & SON: JOANNA ELIZABETH GUTHRIE & OLIVER GUTHRIE
Joanna was born on 1 April 1827 in Monongalia County, Virginia. She married William Joseph Goodnight. They raised a large family in Sheridan, Calhoun, West Virginia. Joanna died at the age of 90 on 25 July 1917. She is buried in the Goodnight Cemetery at Big Bend, Calhoun, West Virginia.
Based on census data, Oliver Guthrie's estimated DOB is also in 1827. He married Theresa Goodnight on 12 June 1852. They had no children. Oliver and Theresa lived in Grant, Monongalia, West Virginia. He died on 9 March 1888. No further details known.
1830 CENSUS of MONONGALIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA
The Household of Edmund Guthrie: 1M of 30 under 40 (Born 1790-1800), 1F of 20 under 30, 2M of 5 under 10, 2M & 1F under 5
This census exactly matches what we know about the family:
1M 30-40 (1790-1800) = Edmund; 1F 20-30 (1800-1810) = Elizabeth; 2M 5-10 (1820-1825) = Joseph & James; 2M & 1F <5 (1826-1830) = Benjamin, Oliver & Joanna
1832: BIRTH of SON: EDMUND GUTHRIE Jr
Edmund was born in January of 1832 in Monongalia County, Virginia. He married twice. First to Margaret J Courtney on 12 Oct 1853. They had 1 son, Milton Clark Guthrie, who appears to have remained single (as of the 1930 Sacramento, California census); and 1 daughter. Margaret died between 1860-1865. Edmund remarried to Laura (nee unknown). They had 4 sons and 6 daughters. Edmund died on 7 Sep 1908 in Burning Springs, Wirt, West Virginia survived by his wife and 8 of the children. There is currently no representative in the DNA Project from Edmund Jr's line.
1835: BIRTH of SON: WILLIAM HENRY GUTHRIE
Henry was born in 1837 in Monongalia County, Virginia. It is unclear whether Henry's father ever saw him; he might have been a posthumous son. He married Catherine W. (Summers) Powell, a widow with 2 sons: Thomas Perry and William C. She was the daughter of James Summers & Mary Ann Barnett. Henry fought during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Co. A, First Regiment WV Cavalry, on 18 July 1861, and was discharged on 8 Aug 1864. Henry & his family lived in Grant District of Monongalia County. They had 3 sons: James J.D., Francis L., and Edmund M. Guthrie. Catherine died in 1899. Henry died on 17 Feb 1907 in Grant, Monongalia, WV. No DNA Project participant from Henry's line at this time.

Caleb died in 1863 once again leaving Elizabeth a widow. She lived for a time with her son Henry & his family, but the next census year shows her living with daughter Phebe.
