1785: BIRTH of WILLIAM FORGUISON GUTHRIE
William Forguison Guthrie was born on 14 September 1785 in the newly formed Lancaster County in South Carolina taken from its Camden District. He was the eldest son of Robert Guthrie and Mary Taylor.

William's parents moved their young family from South Carolina to the lands opening up in Kentucky first settling in Lincoln, KY, then Mercer and Madison Counties, KY.
1790: KENTUCKY COMPILED CENSUS and CENSUS SUBSTITUTES for LINCOLN COUNTY, KY
The Lincoln County Tax Records for the year 1790 act as a census substitute. William's father was taxed in Lincoln County that year.
1793: BIRTH of MARY HODGE SLAUGHTER
William's future wife, Mary Hodge Slaughter, was born in North Carolina on 2 June 1793 to Robert Smith Slaughter and Sarah Hodge. Her parents were married in the Mero District of North Carolina (what later became Middle Tennessee) on 19 Mar 1792. Robert Smith Slaughter abandoned the family for 2 years before Sarah filed for divorce in the Davidson County Courts. The petition was granted in 1803. The children were listed: Mary Hodge Slaughter 10 years on 2 June last, Francis Hodge Asbury Slaughter 8 years on 29 Aug last, and William Slaughter 5 years on 19 Jan last. According to notes on a Find-a-Grave memorial page, Robert Smith Slaughter was caught for horse stealing and murder, and was tried and hung in Vincennes, Knox, Indiana on 25 Oct 1804. He is buried in the Greenlawn Section of the Vincennes City Cemetery. (See my 'Guthrie Research' tree at Ancestry for documentation on the divorce, submitted by James Morgan)
1799: EMIGRATED from KY to TN.
The Guthrie family moved again, this time to the south of Nashville, settling in Williamson County, TN.
1811: MARRIAGE of WILLIAM GUTHRIE and MARY HODGE SLAUGHTER
William and Mary married on 17 October 1811 in Davidson County, TN.
1812: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, SARAH 'SALLIE' HODGE GUTHRIE
Sallie was born on 2 August 1812 probably in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. She was William & Mary's eldest child. According to a statement by author LRG in 'American Guthrie' p197, she was a lifelong invalid who died unmarried. Her exact death date is unknown, but she was alive in 1870 when she was listed in the home of her married sister Amanda Priscilla Guthrie Aycock's family, and their widowed mother Mary.
1814: BIRTH of SON, JAMES BLACKBURN GUTHRIE
James was born on 22 January 1814 probably in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. He served as a private in Capt James T Dunlap's company of TN Troops in the Indian war of 1836. He was also the Postmaster at Paris, Henry, Tennessee. In 1846 James married Mary Jane Marbury. They raised a family of 11 children: Jacob Finley Guthrie, Mary Ann Robinson, James William Guthrie, Thaddius Scott Guthrie, Barney Blount Guthrie, Susan Emma Guthrie, Ripley Dunlap Guthrie, Nannie Forrest Guthrie, Lula Love Guthrie, Charles Bell Guthrie, and Bettie Ellen Guthrie. LRG states, p.197: "He was a reserved, respect-inspiring gentleman of the old school and had a philosophy of life which enabled him to meet every contingency with unruffled calm." Mary Jane (Marbury) Guthrie died in 1875 and James survived her by more than 20 years, passing away on 18 September 1899. His will can be found at Family Search, Henry County Will Book Volume 1, Pages 354-355, Image 193 of 238. There is no representative among James & Mary Jane's descendants in the DNA Project at this time.
1816: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, MARY 'POLLY' TAYLOR GUTHRIE
Mary Taylor Guthrie aka Polly was born on 8 February 1816, probably in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. She married Gray Jones, a farmer. They lived in Henry County, Tennessee and raised a large family. Children: William F Jones, Sarah F Jones, Martha A Jones, Missouri E Jones, Virginia C Jones, Thomas F Jones, James Asberry Jones, John F Jones, Tennessee Jones. Gray Jones died in 1883 and Polly in 1905. They are both buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Death Records at Family Search with this couple listed as parents include: Martha A Seawright (10 Jan 1845 - 22 Aug 1931), Virginia C Rogers (14 Feb 1850 - 31 Jan 1917), and John Asberry Jones (c1858 - 30 May 1955).
1818: BIRTH of SON, GEORGE H GUTHRIE
George was born on 12 July 1818, probably in Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee. 'American Guthrie' author LRG lists George's middle name as "Hodge", which would seem to fit based on family naming patterns. He also has no further information about George. There is a George Harold Guthrie who married a Mary Stone/Sloan in TN and lived in Carroll County, TN who could be a possible match.
1820: CENSUS of FRANKLIN, WILLIAMSON, TENNESSEE, USA
WILLIAM F GUTHRIE HOUSEHOLD: 1M & 1F 26-44; 2M & 2F 10; Slaves: 1F 14.

William was born on 18 September 1820 and died during his infancy of unknown causes.
1821: BIRTH of SON, ROBERT GUTHRIE
Robert Guthrie was born 25 December 1821 in Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee. He was a farmer, wheelwright, and a Methodist minister. Robert is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, TN. He died August 1905.
LRG, p.198, reports that Rev Robert Guthrie was married three times, but here is where the story gets a bit confusing because the names of his wives don't seem to match up with the marriage records. His first marriage was to Sarah Whitlock, second to Emily Harrison, and third to Amanda Harrison, a sister of his second wife, and both being granddaughters of a first cousin of US President Wm Henry Harrison.
Henry County TN Marriage:
Robert Guthrie to Amanda J Whitlock on 4 Oct 1845
Tipton County TN Marriages:
Robert Guthrie to Colorado Harrison on 5 Nov 1854, Book A Page 96.
Robert Guthrie to Amanda Harrison on 29 Nov 1855, Book A Page 107.
According to the 1850 census, Colorado and Amanda were sisters, both being daughters of Zachariah & Charlotte (Melton) Harrison. In the 1870 census, the widowed Charlotte is living with Robert & Amanda's family.
Robert's first marriage, presumably to Amanda J Whitlock produced 3 children: William, Mary and Martha. There were no children from his 2nd marriage to Colorado Harrison. He and Amanda Harrison had 6 children: George Harrison Guthrie, James Blackburn Guthrie, Samuella Guthrie, Robert W Guthrie, Emma Guthrie, and Frank Malone Guthrie. Frank became a prominent judge of Shelby County, TN. There is currently no participant in the DNA Project representing this Guthrie line.
1827: BIRTH of SON, WILLIAM FRANCIS GUTHRIE
William Francis Guthrie was born on 5 June 1827 in Paris, Henry, Tennessee. He married Esther Jane Lemonds in Henry County, TN on his birthday: 5 June 1858. They were parents to 9 children: Alice Adeline Guthrie, John Franklin Guthrie, Mollie Eleanor Guthrie, Isora Pocahontas 'Poca' Guthrie, William Rufus Guthrie, Natalie 'Nelly' Cordelia Guthrie, Georgia Lee Guthrie, Nannie Bell Guthrie, and Ripley Clinton Guthrie. William was a farmer. He remained in Henry county his entire life. He died on 22 December 1914 at the age of 87 and is buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Esther died on 25 February 1917 three years after her husband. DNA Project Participant Larry Lee Guthrie Sr is a direct descendant of William Francis & Esther Jane (Lemonds) Guthrie.
1830: CENSUS of WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, USA
There are 2 William Guthrie Households listed:
WILLIAM GUTHRIE HOUSEHOLD: 1M 40-49, 1F 30-39, 1M & 1F 5-9, 1M & 2F 5. Same Pg as Robert Guthrie Household.
WILLIAM F GUTHRIE HOUSEHOLD: 1M 40-49, 1F 20-29, 1M & 1F 15-19, 1M & 1F 10-14, 1M 5-9, 1M 5, Slaves: 5.
In 1830, William Forguison Guthrie would be 45, his wife Mary about 37, Sallie 18, James 16, Polly 14, George 12, Robert 9, and William Francis 3. Although the wife in the 2nd household is not in the right age category to be Mary, the children's of the genders and age ranges fit perfectly. The 2nd HOH uses the middle initial "F". The 1820 and 1840 censuses also show that William was a slave owner, which is also indicated in the 2nd household.
1833: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, AMANDA PRISCILLA GUTHRIE
William & Mary's youngest daughter, Amanda Priscilla Guthrie, was born in either Williamson or Henry County, Tennessee on 10 December 1833. She married Robert Ruffin Aycock in Henry County, TN on 1 September 1853. They were parents to Walter Frank Aycock, George Clinton Aycock, M. E. 'Dora' Aycock, Nellie Aycock, and Linnie M. Aycock. Robert died in 1909 and Amanda on 2 December 1916. They are buried at Paris City Cemetery, Henry, TN.
1836: BIRTH & DEATH of SON, JOHN HENRY GUTHRIE
The youngest child of the family, John Henry Guthrie was born on 25 September 1836. It is presumed that he died very young. The 1840 census does not include a male child under the age of 10, nor is he listed in the 1850 census.
1838: DEATH of FATHER, ROBERT GUTHRIE
Robert Guthrie died on 13 April 1838 in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. His will entitled William to a portion of his estate.
