THE HIGHLIGHTS:

1798: BIRTH of SAMUEL GUTHRIE

Contrary to what you might find in some online trees, Samuel Guthrie, son of James & Jane (Carnes) Guthrie, was not born on 3 June 1793. That was the DOB of his cousin, Samuel Taylor Guthrie. According to the census records, Samuel was born sometime closer to 1798. His father was listed as a taxpayer in Garrard County, Kentucky as early as 1797 and was still living there in 1815, so it is very likely that Samuel was born there.

1800: BIRTH of ELIZABETH HOPE

The daughter of Richard Hope and Elizabeth Harbison was born on 5 October 1800 in Kentucky. She was called "Betsey".

1819: MARRIAGE of SAMUEL GUTHRIE & ELIZABETH 'BETSEY' HOPE

The couple was married on 2 August 1819 in Mercer County, Kentucky. {Source: Kentucky Marriages, 1802-1850, Ancestry}

1820: CENSUS of KENTUCKY

As far as I can tell, Samuel Guthrie is not listed as a Head of Household, which suggests that he and his wife were enumerated as household members.

1820: BIRTH of SON: JOHN PORTER GUTHRIE

John was born about 1820 in Mercer County, Kentucky. He died in the War with Mexico (1846-1848). No further data.

1821: BIRTH of SON: RICHARD HOPE GUTHRIE

Richard was born 24 Dec 1821 in Mercer County, Kentucky. AKA "Dick Guthrie". He married Sarah Ellen Stewart, daughter of George & Philadelphia (Pierce) Stewart, on 10 Oct 1842 in Boyle County, KY. They were the parents of 9 sons: William Harvey, George Stewart, John Wesley, Richard Hope, James Thomas, Oscar Wright, Samuel Logan, Rollie, & Marion Wallace, and 2 daughters: Elizabeth Jane and Rachel Lee. Information on this family is noted in the Travelin Teachers Family Tree: Stewart Family site, along with family photos and tombstone photos. Richard was a farmer. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 13 May 1911 in Perryville, Boyle County, KY at 89 years of age. Sarah died 7 Feb 1916. They are buried together at the Perryville Cemetery.

1824: BIRTH of SON: WILLIAM THOMAS GUTHRIE

William Thomas Guthrie is the direct ancestor of DNA Project Participant Richard Gray Guthrie. William was born in 1824 in Mercer County, Kentucky, USA. He was enumerated as a 23 year old in the 1850 census, living in his mother Elizabeth (Hope) Guthrie's household along with his younger siblings. The first of two marriages took place in Garrard County, Kentucky on 5 Jan 1852. He married Sally Meritt Eades. They removed from Kentucky about 1853 and settled on a farm 17 miles north of Chilicothe, Livingston, Missouri. They had 2 daughters: Elizabeth Jennie and Berthena. His second wife was Ellen Amelia Anthony, born 31 Mar 1843 in New York. They lived in Livingston County, Missouri near the Linn County line. Children: 5 sons and 6 daughters. Veneida Ann Hope, James William, Ella, David L, Samuel H, Mary J, Sarah E, Minnie G, Clara E, Richard Daniel, and Harry B. Ellen died on 24 Feb 1879 at the age of 35. She is buried in Van Horne Cemetery in Livingston County, MO. William drowned in 1881 in Linn County while trying to cross a stream.

1832: BIRTH of DAUGHTER: RACHEL A. GUTHRIE

Rachael's birth is about 8 years after that of her brother William Thomas Guthrie. Makes me wonder whether there were other pregnancies in between. The only place where I have found Rachel documented is the 1850 census of Boyle County, KY where she is enumerated as an 18-year-old in the household of her mother, Elizabeth Guthrie.

1834: BIRTH of SON HARVEY LOGAN GUTHRIE

Harvey was born on 22 July 1834 in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married at age 43 to Margaret Delilah Martin who was 19 years his junior. They lived on his father's farm and had one son, James Martin Guthrie. Harvey died on 17 April 1913, and Delilah died on 16 Feb 1919, both in Perryville, Boyle, Kentucky. They are buried in Perryville Cemetery.

1835: BIRTH of DAUGHTER: MARGARET GUTHRIE

I have no definite data on Margaret Guthrie, daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Hope) Guthrie. A search of Kentucky Marriage Records at Family Search turns up one likely possibility. Margaret J Guthrie married Christopher My on 4 Sep 1860 in Boyle County, Kentucky. Margaret was enumerated with her mother and siblings in the 1850 Boyle County Census, but was not listed with her mother in the 1860 census.

1838: BIRTH of SON: JAMES BERRY GUTHRIE

James was born on 19 April 1848 in Mercer County, KY. He married Sarah Emma McAfee, daughter of John B & Lavenia McAfee, in Boyle County, KY on 4 Sep 1869. They were the parents of 2 sons and 3 daughters: John McAfee, Elizabeth, Levenia, Samuel Berry, and Emma. The family lived in Perryville, Boyle, KY thru the 1900 census after which they moved to Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama for a time. They were enumerated there for the 1910 census year. Both James and Emma were buried in Perryville Cemetery, Perryville, Boyle, KY. He died on 8 Oct 1908. She died on 7 Feb 1916 in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama at 64y 1m 9days..

ABOUT 1840: MARITAL SEPARATION / PROBABLE DIVORCE / REMARRIAGE to ADELINE CASHION

According to descendants Samuel Guthrie "tired of domestic life, abandoned his family, and moved to Tennessee."

There seems to be a lot of confusion about whether or not this Samuel Guthrie married Adeline Cashion. Transcription (or at least summarization) of Giles County Court Records hints that the Samuel married to Adeline was the son of Robert Guthrie & Mary Jane Norwood, also of Giles County, TN. However, the records themselves mention that their Samuel Guthrie went to Yazoo, MS. Giles County Census records also seem to hint that Adeline's husband was born in KY with parents who had come from SC, much more likely to be a match for the son of James Guthrie & Jane Carnes. Read more about this subject in the Documents Section under Hot Topic 5: The Case of Samuel Guthrie of Giles County, TN, submitted to Guthrie Genealogy by Pat L Dunford in collaboration with Betty McCollum.

Rachel Lee Guthrie Carpenter recalled a get-together with her father, Richard Hope Guthrie, brother William Thomas 'Billy' Guthrie from Missouri, and their father Samuel Guthrie from TN. Donald MacKenzie Guthrie wrote in a letter to his brother: "Sometime after 1835 husband Samuel tired of domestic life, abandoned his family, and moved to Tennessee. There, near Pulaski, in Giles County, I think he married again."
