GUTHRIE

Selma E., was born at Byars, OK to John David and Mandy O'Demmie (Ferguson) Alexander on May 30, 1913 and passed away Monday, August 18, 2003 at the age of 90 years 2 months and 18 days. She spent her early years in the Peavine Community near Byars. Her family moved to Maysville, OK in 1929, where she graduated from high school in 1933. She was married to Ocie William Guthrie in Oklahoma City April 9, 1935. They made their home and raised three daughters in the Antioch Community. Two years after Ocie's death (1983) Selma moved into Pauls Valley. In 1996 she moved into a retirement home in Moore. She is survived by two daughters, Laquetha Young of OKC and Patricia Sparks of Moore, grandsons Shon and Michelle McWhirter and Shan and Angie McWhirter of Maysville, granddaughters Suzanne and Bernie Jacobs of Brooklyn, NY, Betsy and Andrew Penner of Marlboro, NJ, Hope and Richard Kelley of OKC, Junko and Kenji Ozaki of Sidney, OH and 9 great grandchildren Austin Penner, Dalton, Taylor and Siera McWhirter, Shyann McWhirter, Mikayla and Johnna Kelley and Nicki and Sheena Ozaki, 1 sister Russie Dean of CA, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Ocie, daughter Johnnie McWhirter, parents and 13 brothers and sisters. Selma was known in the Garvin County area for the beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes she baked and decorated. She taught Sunday School and Training Union classes for many years at First Baptist Church Elmore City. Selma was active in the Antioch ABC Club, Eastern Star and the Antioch Community Association. Selma stayed busy with crafts such as sewing, baking, arranging flowers, making beautiful angels and birdhouses. She was a very caring and giving person who gladly shared all her handy work with friends, neighbors, relatives and even strangers. God and her family were her most valuable treasures. Services will be 2 pm Friday August 22 at First Baptist Church, Elmore City, and interment following in the Antioch Cemetery under the directions of Wooster Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be made to the restoration fund of the Antioch Schoolhouse and Johnnie Guthrie McWhirter Senior Center.
