THE HIGHLIGHTS:

DNA testing has helped this particular family line verify its link to Branch A.

The following was written by 'American Guthrie' author Laurence R. Guthrie (Book II p.432)

William H. Guthrie prepared himself for the ministry and was ordained by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He became quite a prominent preacher in middle and western Tennessee. At the close of the Civil War he crossed the Mississippi and located in southwestern Missouri, later he removed to Howell County, Mo. He was twice married, but the names of his wives are not known. He had several children.

Much of the information LRG uses in his book for what I call Branch A comes from the writings of Rev. Allen Washington Guthrie and his recollections on the family. It seems that the family had lost track of cousin William sometime after he settled in Missouri.

Fortunately, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church website has a great database on its earliest ministers. That includes several Guthries and William H. Guthrie is one of them.

1802: EARLY SETTLEMENT of HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TN

Source: A History of Humphreys County, Tennessee by Jill Knight Garrett, 1963. US/CA 976.837 H2g, FHL.

p.11 Early Settlement: "In 1802 settlers from Virginia came to the county and settled on the headwaters of Big Richland Creek and White Oak Creek. These settlers included (among others listed) Edmund Woldridge. The county was very sparsely settled untol about 1805. From the very first days of settlement until as late as 1812 the Indians were a constant annoyance to the early settlers. The savages had several villages or encampments in the county by this time and were extremely hostile to the white intruders of the Hunting Ground. They made frequent raids on the settlements, burning the homes of the pioneers, dispersing their stock to the woods, and, in several instances, killing settlers who tried to protect their families and property.

p.14 Some of the land grants issued by the State of Tennessee (included):

EDMUND WOLDRIGE--purchased 175 acres on White Oak Creek from William McClure in 1812.

1810: There is no 1810 census for TN. William would've been living in his parents' household on the family farm in Sumner County, TN. He would've been about 5 years of age.

1820 CENSUS of SUMNER COUNTY, TN
The James Guthrie Household: 1M 45&up, 1F 26-45, 2M16-26, 1M 16-18, 2M & 1F 10-16, 2F 0-10. 4 in agriculture.
William would be one of the 2 males in the 10-16 category at age ~15.
William was only about 19 years of age when he began preaching with John Beard and Eli Guthrie at Mt. Sharon Presbyterian Church between 1824-1828.

1830 CENSUS of HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TN
The William Guthrie Household: 1M20-30.
William H. Guthrie is living alone, but neighbors the households of a James Forrest (probably his cousin) and John & Jean (Guthrie) Madden (his uncle & aunt).

1830-1837 1st Marriage to Unknown Wildridge
DNA Testing shows that the descendants of Samuel W. Guthrie belong to Branch A. Based on the 1840 custody decision, it is presumed that Samuel W. Guthrie was the son of William H. Guthrie. Samuel is named as the grandson of Edmund Wildridge. The LRG book indicates William was 'married twice', so this would be the first of the two marriages. No documented evidence of the marriage has been found to date.

1838: BIRTH of SON, SAMUEL WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Samuel was born, probably in Humphreys County, TN on 24 Sep 1838. Samuel was the only son of William's first wife, Miss Widlridge. He married Margaret Carr in Collin County, Texas on 22 July 1860. They had 8 children: 7 sons and 1 daughter. Samuel is the direct ancestor of DNA Participant, William Gerald Guthrie. Samuel was a stock raiser and consequently moved around between TX, Kansas and Oklahoma, finally settling in Garvin, Oklahoma where he died on 23 March 1904.

1840 CENSUS of HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TN
Since William H. Guthrie was not listed as the head of any Humphreys County household in 1840, but resided there in 1830 and 1850 and married there in 1840, it is likely that he was living in someone else's household that year. Quite possibly the household of Samuel's grandfather, Edmund Willridge/Woolridge.

The Edmund Wildridge Household: 1M 60-70 (b.1770-1780), 1M 30-40 (b.1800-1810), 1M 5-10 (b.1830-1835), 1M<5 (b.1835-1840), 1F 30-40 (b.1800-1810), 1F 70-80 (b.1760-1770)

The ages of the males in the house indicate that William could be the 30-40 year-old. Samuel was born in 1838, so he could be the <5-year old.

"Wildridge,(Woldridge), Edmund, died between July and Aug. 1840, signed will in July 1840, will probated in Aug; mentions wife Elizabeth, son

Samuel, my daughters Elizabeth and Lucretia Knight and her bodily heirs; grandson Silvester Adams before he comes of age, grandson Samuel

Guthrie; In March 1842 Samuel W. Guthrie was ward of William Guthrie; in April 1843 the minor orphan heirs of Edmund Wildridge were James T.,

Margaret, Cordelia F. and Rufus S. Knight.( From wills and court minutes of Humphreys County)

There is no indication of William's wife's name. It may take a little more digging through some Humphrey's County documents to find it. Let me know if you find it first!

At the next gathering of the Springfield Presbytery, the members offered the following resolutions:

Rev. T.W. Pendergrass offered a preamble and resolution expressive of the feelings of Presbytery in reference to the death of Rev. Wm. H. Guthrie, which was unanimously adopted, and is the following:

Whereas, Since the last meeting of this Presbytery one of our members, Rev. W.H. Guthrie, has been summoned from his labors to his reward in heaven,

Resolved 1. That his death being sudden and consequently unexpected, is an enforcement of the admonition, "Be ye also ready."

2. That his removal from his ____ field of labor, should be regarded by the congregations which expected his labors as suggestive of a careful inquity as to the design of Providence in the removal of their under Shepherd; and should be viewed as a loud call to humiliation and prayer on their part and that of the Presbytery

3. That we hereby tender our fraternal sympathy to his bereaved consort and children, commending to the care of a faithful and covenant keeping God.

4. That as an expression of our esteem of his counsel as a Presbyter, and his devotion to his sacred calling, a funeral sermon be delivered to-day by Rev. J.N. Edmiston at 11 oclock A.M.
